GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is an all India examination that is primarily conducted to examine the understanding level of the candidate in various undergraduate subjects in engineering and technology as well as post-graduate level subjects in science.

What is GATE Exam?

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination is conducted every year. This exam is mainly for getting admission into higher all India ranking colleges of engineering and technology like IISc, IITs, NITs. GATE Score also opens gates for jobs opportunities in several Public Sector Unit and research organizations. (PSU through GATE).these institutes mainly organize this test so that they can attract top engineering students and ensure they have a good chance at getting admission into their universities. Getting into a graduate program or applying for an entrance exam is a difficult process. The GATE, which stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, is a difficult exam that tests problem solving ability, reasoning and analytical thinking, communication skills, and analytical skills.


The full name of the GATE exam is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is an all-India examination, primarily intended to examine the understanding levels of candidates in undergraduate subjects in engineering and technology as well as postgraduate subjects in science. Every year, this exam is conducted by these eight institutes—Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs). and 7 Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras).These institutes also organize GATE tests in order to open up admission gates for higher ranking colleges of engineering and technology like IISc, IITs and NITs.

Why Appear in GATE Exam?

Having performed well in GATE exam, you can pursue higher studies i.e. Master of Engineering (M.E.)/Master of Technology (M.Tech) courses and PhD. Programs at various IITs, NITs, IISc, GFTIs and other reputed Universities.

GATE score is required for admission to top engineering and technology (IT) Institutes across India like IITs, NITs, IISc etc. The GATE score is also used by several foreign universities like National University of Singapore (Singapore), Technical University of Munich (Germany), and Aachen University (Germany) as well.

For government jobs, your GATE Score will remain valid for the current year.

GATE Exam Eligibility

B.E. / B.Tech. / B. Pharm. : A candidate who is currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program OR has already completed any government approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts is eligible to appear for GATE 2023 examination. GATE Papers

It is already mentioned that there are total 29 gate papers out of which applicants can only appear in one or two paper. An applicant is free to appear in any paper of his/her choice. However, he/she are advised to choose paper carefully according to employment opportunities and institutes admission criteria. After submission of GATE Application, a candidate will not be allowed to change paper. (GATE Papers)


GATE Examination Cities

GATE Committee has divided India into 8 Zone according to the location of 8 IITs. Cities near to these zones are allotted to that IIT for easing administrative work. Applicants are allowed to choose THREE Examination Centers. The first and Second choice should be from the same zone. However, the third option can be from any zone. (GATE Examination Cities)

GATE Question Paper Pattern

In the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF, XE, GE and NM, the Engineering Mathematics will carry around 15% of the total marks, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining around 70% of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.


In the papers bearing the codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST, XH and XL, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining 85% of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper. (GATE Paper Pattern)



GATE Question Types

In GATE Examination there is two type of questions:

(1) Multiple Choice Questions: MCQ consist of 4 options out of which candidates have to select only one answer. There is Negative marking for MCQ. In case of the wrong answer, for 1 marks question, there is 0.33 marks deduction and for 2 marks question, there is 0.66 mark deduction.

(2) Numerical Answer Type: NAT type question does not show option. The candidate has to fill signed real number with the help of virtual numeric keypad provided on the computer screen. There is NO Negative Marking for NAT.

GATE Important Date

GATE 2023 online application form will be availability from 1st week of September, 2022. GATE 2023 online application form last date would be around 1st week of October, 2022. (GATE Important Dates)


GATE Admit Card

GATE Admit Card is NOT sent to the candidate by post/email. Applicants have to download it from GATE official website. GATE Admit Card will tentatively be available from 1st week of January, 2023. 



Along with the printed GATE Admit card, the original and valid photo ID proof which was mentioned in application form is mandatory for entry in the examination hall. GATE Examination is of THREE Hours Duration.


GATE Exam Result

GATE 2023 results will be announced on the Last week of March, 2023.


GATE Score Card

Maximum Gate Mark is 100 and Maximum GATE Score is 1000. GATE Score is calculated on the basis of GATE Marks. After result declaration applicants can download GATE Score Card from GATE official website between Last week of March, 2023 to Last week of May, 2023. NO Hard Copy of GATE Score Card is sent to the candidates.
